Here’s what I’m looking forward to seeing in 2017, listed in alphabetical order:
Blade Runner 2049 (Denis Villeneuve). Yes, this could be absolutely terrible. I’m not sure Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner really needs a sequel. But if it’s going to happen, let’s hope it’s incredible. The first trailer looks promising.
Dunkirk (Christopher Nolan). A WWII film crafted by Christopher Nolan will almost certainly be an epic, immersive experience.
The Glass Castle (Destin Daniel Cretton). Cretton’s Short Term 12 was my favorite film from 2013, and The Glass Castle reunites him with Brie Larson. A coming-of-age story about a dysfunctional family running from the FBI, the film also stars Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts.

Graduation (Christian Mungiu). Mungiu crafts heartwrenching dramas filled with weighty ethical dilemmas. Graduation is a story about a father’s care for his daughter and the boundaries he’s willing to cross to allow her to succeed.
Personal Shopper (Olivier Assayas). A ghost story set in the fashion world, starring Kristen Stewart. It won Best Director at Cannes in 2016, and looks sufficiently unnerving.
The Salesman (Asghar Farhadi). On last year’s most anticipated list, Farhadi’s film about the adaptation of Death of a Salesman and its role in the relationship between the actors sounds very intriguing.
Star Wars: Episode VIII (Rian Johnson). I found J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII to be a delightful, fun romp through nostalgia, and it introduced some very interesting characters to the Star Wars universe. I really enjoyed Rian Johnson’s previous films (Brick, The Brothers Bloom, Looper), and look forward to the further adventures of Rey, Finn, Kylo, Poe, and BB-8.
The Unknown Girl (Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne). While the reviews from Cannes and TIFF make this sound like a middle-of-the-road Dardennes project, they’re still my favorite international filmmakers working today, and I’ve looked forward to seeing this film since last year.
Untitled Paul Thomas Anderson Project (P.T. Anderson). It’s a Paul Thomas Anderson film with Daniel Day-Lewis. Enough said.
Weightless (Terrence Malick). It’s a Terrence Malick film with Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara and Natalie Portman and Michael Fassbender and Val Kilmer holding a chainsaw. Enough said, again. Update: The title has now apparently been changed to Song to Song.
